Ownership
June 19, 2009 @ 02:56 PM

AALF received this question from Graham Hughes:

"I think that parent/student ownership is vital to the success of a 1-to-1 program, however I have heard many voices suggesting school-ownership is the best way. I would love to hear opinions on the pros and cons from your community."

Re: Ownership

When we began our tablet program, we felt that students should feel ownership of their computers which would result in them taking better care, be more engaged in using their "own" tablet. After 3 years, we find that this is true for the majority. There is a small group that are not as responsible as they should be for care of their computers, but that group would probably be the same either way. This summer, I spoke with a tech at another school where all their laptops are school owned, and assigned out to the students. He pretty much said the same thing - the majority are responsible and there is always those few. So while I would agree that students should feel "ownership" of their laptops, I think the actual "buyers" could be either parents or school, and I'm not sure what difference it would make. Would love to hear from schools that buy and assign their laptops...
