Hi, everyone! I'm Crystal Steker, Director of Technology for a K-12 school district in Lake Zurich IL (suburb of Chicago).

We have been looking at a 1-1 initiative for several years, but have not been able to move forward for a variety of reasons.

I'm hoping that I will be better able to transition my district in this direction if I am able to learn the benefits, challenges from those that are two steps ahead.

Better late than never!
I provide 1:1 academic support (organization, study skills, test-taking skills, etc.) to students in grades 5-12 at a private school in Maine; this year I'll be teaching social and study skills to 5th and 6th graders. They do not have tablets yet, unfortunately.

A big 'welcome' to all participants of the Next Steps Institute 'We've Got Laptops--Now What?!' starting August 18, 2009. As you can see above, participants from the previous 'Got Laptops?!' Institute used this space to introduce themselves.

Please let everyone know a little about yourself and your school or district, when you are planning to begin your laptop program, any previous experience you've had planning and/or implementing laptop programs, and any specific issues or questions you want to address at the institute.

We hope participants from every group, past, present, and future can benefit from becoming acquainted and sharing their experiences in this forum.

Hi Everyone! My name is Brenda Fayerman and I am the IT Director at Bialik High School in Montreal, Quebec, Canada (http://www.jppsbialik.ca )
We are about to start our 5th year of our 1-to-1 program, the 2nd year with tablets. The program is successful in that more students are engaged in their learning and students use technology seamlessly for their work (it feels "natural"). I believe that we are providing our kids with the best possible tools and resources for learning. On the other hand, we have a broad spectrum of buy-in, skill level, and desire to change from our staff. I would like to inspire more change and do more of the transformative type of activities that I think technology can enable.
I am looking forward to getting some concrete ideas of how to change the classroom effectively by taking advantage of the 1-to-1 technology paradigm.
Also, I enjoy the online learning experience and look forward to meeting fellow participants from as far away as Australia!

Good Evening, Everyone. My name is Hollie and I was recently named the Coordinator of Educational Technology for the district that I taught in for 28 years. Prior to this position, I was a business education teacher and the Classrooms for the Future Coach. We do not currenly have a laptop program, but the Classrooms for the Future teachers each received a cart with 30 laptops for their classrooms. Each of our other schools have at least two laptop carts that can be signed out by teachers. I am hoping to learn more about effectively implementing laptops in the classrooms on the K-12 level, so that I can be more productive and helpful in my new job.

I'm Vicki LaPlace and I teach at St. Joseph's Academy, an all-girls, Catholic high school in Baton Rouge, LA. We have been a laptop school since 1998. I am taking this course to assess whether or not it would be a good introduction for new teachers to our campus. Although I have been using laptops for 11 years, I think I have a lot to learn. I am hoping to learn new ways to make use of all the options out there for online learning. I teach 9th grade Physical Science and (some years) Biology and Chemistry. When I was in high school, computers filled entire rooms, so I am not a native user and although I embraced the technology, it has been a challenge to me to use effectively for teaching and learning.

Hi all,
I am signed up for the class starting Nov 3rd. I was a middle school teacher for 15 years in Arizona - science and math - and although I wasn't in a 1:1 environment in my classroom at the time I did have 9 computers (8 years ago, that was a lot). I currently work with Ministries of Education and teachers worldwide in helping them improve their teaching practice. Many of these teachers are being "thrown" into a 1:1 situation - with little to no teacher pd.
I am also currently adjunct faculty at Cal State Fullerton - teaching an online course - and so they are in a 1:1 elearning environment
I am looking forward to learning more about the power of 1:1 elearning and other best known methods.
