School Goals for 1-to-1 Program

That was a great way to start the 4-day session, I think it's important to think about why we have a 1-to-1 program, what the benefits might be to students, learning, and the academic life of the school. I think our school did a lot of thinking about it at the admin and trustee level a few years ago, and in the planning committee, but I realized today that we have stopped communicating that part of the program to teachers and that we could improve on that. Here are our original program goals to think about and compare with other schools.
Questions that come to my mind after the first session: Are our school 1-to-1 goals specific enough? Besides having them on our school website, how could they be better communicated? What do they mean to teachers in classrooms? How can we use 21st century technology tools in ways that support our educational goals and improve learning? How valuable it is to share and learn with other schools and other educators, that goals might be a process that changes over time as we learn and share - so how can our program consistently grow and reflect that learning?
Our school goals: The Berwick Academy “Learning with Tablets” program will ensure that all students will have access to 21st century technology tools as they engage in learning, thinking, and creating within our school community. “Learning with Tablets” will increase student engagement, make it easier to differentiate instruction according to students’ needs, and solidify home-school connections. As a learning tool, computers facilitate the management, analysis, assimilation, and presentation of information with more sophistication, greater creativity and increased confidence.

An example of 1-to-1 school-wide goals plus accompanying core instructional strategies and teacher support questions.
Through the use of laptops and in 1-to-1 learning environments, students will...
1. Increase their reading and thinking skills. (Core instructional strategy: Use available electronic resources to engage students in actively reading both hardcopy and monitor reading resources. **Teacher support questions: What support do teachers need to understand and teach the difference between hardcopy and monitor reading? What support do teachers need to understand the term 'active reading?'
2. Use technology as a tool for learning and exhibiting new understandings. (Core instructional strategy: Use digital and Internet resources to expand student learning; use Web 2.0 resources to share new understandings. **Teacher support question: What support do teachers need in order to incorporate digital and Web 2.0 resources in their lesson design?)
3. Know how to access, process, critically analyze and apply information within various settings of their lives. (Core instructional strategy: Teach how to search, evaluate, validate, and analyze online resources while applying new understandings to content learning. **Teacher support question: Do our teachers understand our site searching practices of searching, evaluating, validating, and validating?
4. Collaborate with educators, mentors, experts and other students and apply these collaborative activities to their content learning. (Core instructional strategy: Use face-to-face and online resources for collaboration; Use project based learning when appropriate within each content area; use the establish protocol when engaging students with online collaborative projects. **Teacher support question: What support do teachers need to understand the value of collaboration with world-wide educators, experts, and other students? What support do teachers need to understand our school protocols and practices regarding online collaboration?)

As a classroom teacher, I have been gaining new awareness of our purpose for incorporating the use of 1-to-1 laptops at this particular time ... when budgets are so tight!
As always, the first goal is to improve student learning. The laptops, however, make this possible in new and challenging ways ... challenging to both students and their teachers!
1. provide more student-centered learning. When they take control of their learning, it becomes more meaningful and lasting as well as developing new habits to apply elsewhere in their learning.
2. differentiated instruction is a must and this provides more opportunities for student and instructor
3. this levels the playing field a bit. By providing the technology that only more affluent students were able to afford, all students have the same opportunities.
4. improve critical reading and writing skills ~ no longer limited to a textbook or a novel that is in the storage closet!
5.build 21st century skills to better prepare students for their future post-secondary school, whether this is college/uni, trade school, armed forces or job market.

1. to have more student-centered learning environment; teacher as coach instead of teacher teaching the entire time.
2.to provide differentiated instruction more effectively; especially helpful for students with IEP's.
3. improve critical reading and writing skills
4. to build 21st Century skills tyo get students ready for college and careers; our students will need to be able to compete with other students in surrounding counties and states in this time where jobs are hard to find.
