My 1-to-1 Pedagogy Statement:

I believe that laptops are one of the most powerful thinking tools available for students as they learn about their lives and that they are vital for my students as they learn about the content of my class and how to apply this content knowledge and understanding to their lives in general.

When I teach, I hope to communicate my passion for the subject matter. Experience has taught me that there are many ways to reach students with respect to their learning styles. The use of technology is one more way to capture my students’ attention. Tablets/laptops are a great tool to ensure my accessibility to students, and their accessibility to me. We can move beyond the traditional lecture approach and beyond the confines of the classroom. Technology provides me with a means to offer vast quantities of information (both general and problem/project specific) to my students whenever they need it. Technology creates a wonderful opportunity for my students to teach me, thereby ensuring we engage in a collaborative learning process.

I believe the study of Latin can be enlivened by the use of modern technology, particularly with regard to my school's tablet program, the availability of a classroom projector, and the use of email and the web. To this end, I will incorporate the use of technology into my lesson planning and my anticipated student outcomes wherever possible and whenever I think it will increase the students’ ease and rapidity of understanding information.

Technology is a transparent part of children's lives.
We live in a time where the world is flat and we have whole new minds.
Schools hold the responsibility to show their students how tools of the 21st century can be used for learning.
I believe in creating life-long learners.
I believe in giving students choices, challenges, and learning opportunities that have meaning and match their differnt abilities.
Learning is a process, and learning how to learn is as important as learning a set of skills or group of facts or concepts.
Learning how to learn, today, means having media and literacy information skills to acquire, organize, evaluate, and use information.
Today's students need to know when to use technology for learning and how to choose the most appropriate tool for the task.
Today's teachers need to know how technology tools can influence the learning process and what tools are most appropriate for their students' learning.

First draft of pedagogy statement: All students are capable of learning. Students have different learning styles, levels of maturity and engagement. Hands-on, project-based and collaborative curriculum address these student differences better than other methods I have used. I will use available technology and software, manipulatives, interdisciplinary collaboration, field experiences, authentic assessment and student self-reflective feedback on a regular basis to push my students toward improved skills and greater understanding.I will continue my learning each year as well through professional development, and implementation of refinements to my lessons and development of new strategies.

Pedagogical Statement for Technology - My Draft Statement

I believe technology is a powerful tool to model and explore mathematical concepts. While instructional, step-by-step guidance is still a necessary part of teaching math in order to build skills, there are larger mathematical questions that can be presented for students to tinker with, ideas to be tested, and relationships to be understood using technology. Students using technology to tell about and demonstrate the math they have learned is also a powerful way to clarify understanding. Using on-line texts and sites to watch and replay demonstrations of math can help ingrain the patterns, skills, and techniques important to memory that help form the foundation for further mathematical study. I see thinking as the role of the student’s mind being opened by questions exploring deeper math relationships and connections.

I believe that tablets allow students to become engaged and excited about learning. Tablets help the study of English and History become more relevant to students and enables them to make predictions for the future. With tablets, History and English become more fully experienced with students as active participants.

I believe that technology enriches mathematical learning through its ability to facilitate exploration, to link theory and technique in a meaningful and relevant context, and to create new pathways for communication. Technology is a tool, that when used thoughtfully, enhances the learning process.

Each student has a unique array of learning strengths, talents and challenges. The use of a one-to-one laptop program allows me to help differentiate instruction for students with learning differences. I will use software and websites and design lessons that help students strengthen skills in reading, writing, spelling and math. In addition, I will access technologies that allow students to bypass weaknesses in core academic areas, allowing students to strengthen their thinking skills, improve writing and editing skills, access rich reading material (auditory), and create high level products that reflect their higher level thinking.

My classroom should be an environment of intellectual stimulus, challenge, and growth. Technology is one additional tool in the classroom for promoting these values and skills. To the degree that technology assists in promoting the perceptive reading and clear writing of several modes of academic and cultural discourse, it should be incorporated into the classroom and made available for student use. Technology can increase the varieties of discourse available and increase the modes in which students can practice them.

I would like to integrate technology into my curriculum in such a way that students know the power of it. If I introduce younger students to the different ways they can use technology to strengthen their strengths and work on weaknesses, they will feel more empowered to use it independently as a learning tool for understanding. Tablet use provides opportunities for multi-sensory learning, and this type of learning is invaluable for all kinds of learners. If I can be flexible and willing to learn different programs, my students will benefit.

Work in Progress

I believe it is important to provide students with learning experiences and opportunities that are aligned with current societal trends. The use of technology (technological literacy?-if that is a word) in the workplace, higher education, communication amongst individuals is becoming an increasingly vital skill.

I believe students' learning styles/multiple intelligences should be valued and cultivated. Technology provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to use different mediums? to construct new ways to enhance their own learning.

I believe that if encouraged by teachers and provided with tools such as those in a 1-to-1 program, that all students have the ability to become lifelong learners. In my district, providing laptops to all students will also level the "educational playing field" since not all families can provide technology for their children at home. The combination of teachers knowing the content and different learning styles coupled with differentiating instruction to meet all students' needs, provides a powerful learning experience. While technology that students have been exposed to and are accustomed to using in their everyday lives is integrated, the learning opportunities of all involved will be enhanced, students and teachers alike.

I believe that each child is unique in the way he or she grows, develops and learns, and that effective teaching only occurs when each child’s uniqueness is acknowledged and the learning program addresses this uniqueness.

I believe that learning technologies provide the means for each child's uniqueness to become the building blocks for their participation in a technologically rich world.
