Pedagogy Statement for My 1:1 English Classroom

Gretel DeRuiter

I believe that laptops are powerful tools for dynamic research, learning, collaboration, communication, and presentation.

As such, I will design lessons that focus on building literacy and skills for clear oral and written expression – introducing and implementing a wide array of 21st Century resources and tools. I will also regularly incorporate opportunities for relevant, authentic, project-based learning so that students will be able to apply what they learn to their own lives in meaningful ways. Using Google tools and Haiku LMS, I will create a virtual classroom that remains active even after the students leave my physical classroom.

Students will use their laptops daily in various ways to contribute to our classroom learning culture:
• to access class assignments and guidelines
• to construct their knowledge
• to find answers to their questions independently
• to share their learning with others (through discussion threads, presentations, etc.)
• to write, review, and revise
• to collaborate with others on project work
• to create a portfolio of their work.
