Benefits of iPads in classrooms outweigh the problems: study
Posted by: Susan Einhorn

Thierry Karsenti remembers the intense look in the young girl’s eyes when he moved to take her iPad away.

“My Precious!” she said, Gollum-like, clutching the tablet to her chest.

“The iPad wave is here,” Karsenti explained, “and once children have it, you can’t take it away.”

Karsenti, who holds the Canada Research Chair on information and communication technologies in education at Université de Montréal, has just published the first sweeping study on the use of iPads in Quebec classrooms, based on surveys and interviews with 302 teachers and 6,057 students across the province, in 18 public and private, French and English, elementary and secondary schools.

And while he identified the many daunting challenges involved in bringing this new technology into the classroom — first and foremost the temptation it represents at the tip of your fingers — Karsenti concludes the benefits outweigh the problems.
