'Bring your own device' worries Marlborough parents
Posted by: Susan Einhorn

Angry Marlborough parents have been asked to splash out $495 on laptops for kids as young as seven.

Renwick School issued a newsletter two weeks ago on "device requirement" for pupils in year 3 and above, saying the school was on a journey to become a full 'bring your own device' school.

Computers were a key learning tool but the school could not afford to fund computers for every student, the newsletter said.

"Unfortunately the cost of this must fall on the parents," it said.

The newsletter stated Renwick School had negotiated a deal with Noel Leeming to get Chromebooks for $459.65.

A parent, who did not want to be named, said her child could barely look after a lunch box, let alone a computer and she felt there had been a "minuscule amount of consultation".

She even considered changing schools because of the issue, she said.

Another parent said she was also unhappy with the decision. Nothing specific was said in the newsletter about how the computers would be used, she said.

Parents had been left in the dark as to how lessons would be structured, she said.
