TakingITGlobal for Educators: E-Courses in Global Education
Author: Kate Lang, TIG | July 13th, 2011

TIGedToday’s students will need to both compete in a global knowledge-based economy and collaborate to devise and implement solutions to major global issues such as poverty, climate change, and conflict. As educators, we know that we need to prepare our students for an increasingly globalized world but may not know how to go about it.

Dedicated to empowering teachers to use technology to facilitate transformative international learning experiences, TakingITGlobal for Educators (TIGed) recently launched two accredited, graduate level e-courses in global education. Designed to support teachers of various subjects and grades who are interested in bringing global issues, perspectives and voices into their classrooms, these e-courses focus on integrating media and technology, incorporating global dimensions, and applying reasoning to real world challenges.

Two e-courses are available: Introduction to Global Education and Introduction to Global Project-Based Learning. The first is tailored for educators with limited experience in global education who are looking for an introduction to the practice. The second is geared towards those who have some experience but are looking to take global education to the next level by working on projects with international partners. Together, these e-courses equip teachers with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to facilitate effective, standards-based global learning experiences.

Attracting participants from around the world, TIGed’s e-courses are global learning experiences in and of themselves, demonstrating the connective power of technology and the benefit of learning with peers from other countries. Moreover, their online format provides first-hand experience using technology to attend class, learn from and share best practices, post work, engage in discussions, and connect with classmates synchronously and asynchronously.

The next round of TIGed course offerings is set to begin in September. What better way to transition from summer to fall than to reflect on your teaching practice and enhance your skill set with new tools? The value of the e-courses to the participants’ professional development is illustrated by the following testimonials. The courses:

“. . . emphasized the need for keeping things real, relevant and connected to others beyond students' immediate school community. The tools available to extend and connect more freely are also causing me to rethink how I might engage students further.”

“. . . helped me to understand how to teach global issues and why to teach them. It has given me ideas of resources and ways I can use the internet to help teach global issues.”

“. . . has been very relevant for me both professionally and personally. Even though my core role is administrative in a sense I still teach. This course has provided stimulus material for my professional learning sessions, ideas and issues to discuss at faculty meetings and excellent ideas to implement in the classroom. I have already used many of the ideas I have seen.”
